Summary of Position

The Research Assistant Professor will work within the Center for Sustainable Seafood Systems and lead research, education, and outreach focusing on aquaculture, fisheries and ecosystem sciences. The Research Assistant Professor will serve as Principal Investigator on extramural grants, supervising research and operation staff, publishing results, growing educational programs, building partnerships, and engaging stakeholders.
The individual will be supervised by the Director of the UNH Center for Sustainable Seafood Systems and will work closely with the Director of the School of Marine Science and Ocean Engineering, the Director of NH Sea Grant, and faculty/staff in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences and the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture.

Acceptable Minimum Qualifications

A PhD is required in appropriate field of Marine Science, Biology, Aquaculture or a closely related scientific or technical field. The candidate must have completed a post-doctoral research fellowship.

  • Sustained research publication record, record of extramural grantsmanship
  • Finfish, shellfish, and macroalgae aquaculture experience
  • Strong track record of scientific communication and presentation
  • Demonstrated experience leading and participating in collaborative research within and outside of research institutes
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis and scientific design
  • Strong communication, team building and leadership skills
  • AAUS Scientific Diving Certification
  • Captain’s License or the sea time and qualifications to obtain one
  • Teaching and student mentoring experience

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Diverse portfolio of successful extramural grantsmanship as lead PI (e.g., funding from federal, state, foundation, industry sponsors)
  • Outreach and fundraising experience
  • Experience working with fishermen and knowledge of the Gulf of Maine ecosystem
  • Experience in spawning and larval rearing of marine pelagic finfish
  • Experience in aquaculture system design, construction and management
  • Experience in translational research and biotechnology
  • Laboratory experience, especially related to genetics, reproductive biology, and practical aquaculture research
  • Demonstrated ability to build and manage research teams
  • Ability to operate a forklift, crane, and/or other large machinery
  • Knowledge about boat and small engine maintenance
