Essential Job Duties

We are seeking a Facilities Maintenance Technician proficient in the maintenance, repair, and operation of heating, cooling, and steam/hot water boilers, including boiler auxiliary equipment within the designated maintenance service zone. The ideal candidate will possess skills to install HVAC systems and perform minor plumbing/piping installations. Expertise in electrical systems up to 600 VAC is required, covering the construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of secondary electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures. Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and correct/replace temperature controls, regulators, humidity controllers, sensors, pneumatic control valves, and regulators
  • Maintain, repair, and install plumbing systems and associated equipment/fixtures
  • Conduct preventive maintenance on refrigeration/air conditioning equipment following manufacturer’s instructions
  • Analyze faults, defects, and malfunctions within secondary electrical systems and control circuits, implementing appropriate corrective measures
  • Develop solutions for standard and occasional non-standard repairs for plumbing, electrical, and HVAC issues
  • Ensure adherence to operational and safety procedures, and compliance with regulatory agencies/standards

Other Responsibilities

  • Must participate in quarterly on-call program, carrying a pager for one week at a time. This occurs every ten to fourteen weeks
  • Must be able to work overtime and/or alternate shifts when necessary for emergencies and unforeseen circumstances
  • This position has been designated as essential personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule
  • This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).
 
Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrate through work, a depth of knowledge and skills for pneumatic controls, as well as DDC type of controls
  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters
  • Must be able to lift up to 60 to 90 pounds frequently, with or without reasonable accommodations
  • Experience in mechanical or building trades

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with pneumatic controls and DDC type controls
  • Experience in the trades of HVAC, plumbing, and electrical

Required License or Certification

  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained
