Essential Job Duties

The Assistant Director will work with the Director to coordinate the interactive services process for students with disabilities and will advise faculty, staff, and campus partners on accessibility and accommodations-related issues for students. The Assistant Director determines eligibility and oversees facilitation and the provision of reasonable accommodations for qualified university students with disabilities to ensure equitable access to the programs, services and activities of the institution. This position will conduct campus-wide training activities on disability, rights and responsibilities best practices, and inclusive design for individuals with disabilities.

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Review disability documentation including student’s self-report to determine how the condition’s impact translates to the higher education setting.
  • Engage in an interactive process in collaboration with students, instructors and staff to determine reasonable academic, housing, dining and any other relevant accommodations.
  • Facilitate communication between faculty, staff, and students with disabilities on access and accommodation issues.
  • Provide on-going consultation and problem-solving assistance to faculty and staff in the provision of appropriate services and accommodations.
  • Assist students in understanding their legal rights and responsibilities. Promote student self-reliance and the development of appropriate self-advocacy skills.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all communications as required under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Create, organize, and maintain up-to-date confidential electronic records.
  • Stay current with legislation/policy and national, state, and local issues affecting access for individuals with disabilities.
  • Student Support/Institutional Outreach
  • Participate in divisional and institution-wide initiatives to advance opportunities for individuals with disabilities to be equitably represented in the student population, be retained, and graduate from undergraduate and graduate programs.
  • Develop and provide consultation, technical assistance and/or training to the University and community on disability-related topics to promote awareness, advocacy and competence in ensuring access for individuals with disabilities.

Other Responsibilities

  • Represent the Department on campus committees and at initiatives and events.
  • Actively participate in divisional work-groups.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience

Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Three (3) years of progressive experience working directly with individuals with disabilities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, training or experience interpreting federal and state laws regarding disability rights and their application to higher education.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of understanding of disability rights and disability culture.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in a human services field such as Rehabilitation Counseling, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Special Education or related field.
  • Direct experience determining eligibility for disability related accommodations.
  • Experience working in a college or university disability services office.
  • Familiarity with various neuropsychological, psycho-educational and psychological assessment batteries used in the diagnosis of learning disabilities, mental health conditions, AD/HD and traumatic brain injury, and interpreting the data from such reports into appropriate accommodations for the post-secondary setting.
