POSITION TITLE: Staff Scientist, Sr. Multi-omics core

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Sr. Staff Scientist of the Multi-omics core will assist with management and participate in the daily operation of a core facility that provides service for proteomics, lipidomics, and metabolomics. The Sr. Staff Scientist will provide technical expertise in the form of performing samples preparation, data acquisition and analysis, research consultation, and training.

The Sr. Staff Scientist, under limited supervision, will conduct experiments related to state-of-the-art LC/MS/MS technologies. Responsibilities include execution of specific workflows for sample preparation including protein and peptide fractionation, protein digestion, peptide labeling, enrichment of post-translationally modified peptides, lipidomic and metabolite extraction. Responsibilities also include preparation of capillary LC columns, operation of instrument software for data acquisition by LC/MS and bioinformatics software for protein, lipid and metabolite identification and quantification. Additional daily activities include routine laboratory maintenance, reagent ordering, instrument QA/QC, data management and record keeping, maintenance of LC and mass spectrometry instrumentation. The person in this role should also have strong organizational and communication skills, and should have the ability to learn and assist in the development and optimization of new protocols/technologies needed for multi-omic research.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Assist in day-to-day operations of the Core Facility including tracking service usage for invoicing purposes, and other related duties and tasks as required or assigned
  • Provide scientific consultation to users to assess their experimental needs
  • Design and implement both routine and custom experiments
  • Ensure that instruments are maintained to the highest working standards, including regular hardware/software maintenance and repairs
  • Work with researchers to achieve targeted research goals utilizing mass spectrometry (MS) technology platforms. Provide collaborative support to experiment design and implementation of existing and new approaches using MS technologies.
  • Provide expert consultation on use of MS technologies to query biological systems.
  • Develop new in-house protocols and assist with troubleshooting on execution of existing protocols for MS applications.
  • Keep up to date with the state-of-the-art in MS-based technologies, especially in the fields of metabolomics and proteomics by review of relevant literature and attendance at scientific meetings.
  • Review the latest in technology (hardware, software and networking) and ensure that recommendations for changes or upgrades will integrate well with existing Multi-Omics core technologies.
  • Performs procedures associated with protein/peptide/lipid/metabolite identification and quantitative analysis, including sample preparation, instrument operation and data analysis.
  • Collaborates and assists researchers on application and development of advanced MS methods for multi-omic analysis.
  • Identify, develop, test and implement novel methods and technologies pertinent to the research conducted at the Institute.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • A PhD in Chemistry/ Biology or a related field is required
  • 7+ years of hands on LC/MS experience in proteomics or related fields
  • 5+ year of experience maintaining and troubleshooting LCMS and/or UPLC systems
  • Demonstrated ability to teach and train others
  • Ability to effectively organize own time to accommodate user needs and to be responsive to the user base in both a timely and equitable manner
  • Ability to communicate with a diverse array of people from a wide variety of cultural and educational backgrounds, individually or in groups
  • Excellent experimental design and data analysis skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Experience in the design, execution and analysis of mass spectrometry based experiments for proteomic, lipidomic, and metabolomic analysis on current technology platforms, especially Orbitrap Tribrids, Q-Exactive, and QQQ systems.
  • Experience and detailed understanding of a range of methodologies utilizing MS technology including protein and peptide identification and quantitative analysis, protein pull down experiments, tandem mass tag labeling for multiplexed quantitative analysis. Analysis of post-translational modifications on complex proteomic samples. Lipidomics, metabolomics, PK/PD and other current techniques relevant to multi-omic analysis via MS.
  • Experience with current methods for data analysis of complex proteomic, lipidomic and metabolomic data from current orbitrap, QQQ and TOF mass spec instruments. Successful experience working with bioinformatic developers in this area.
  • Maintain current working knowledge of state of the art instrumentation in this field.
  • Demonstrated experience to execute complex experiments and techniques with reliability and accuracy while working within time constraints.
  • Demonstrated experience establishing and managing efficient workflows for various mass spectrometry-based analysis platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, execute and optimize cutting-edge mass spec-based methods.
  • Well versed in using analysis software and downstream data analysis of complex mass spec data sets such as Skyline.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize work and independently manage multiple, diverse and competing priorities while meeting deadlines; plan and develop meaningful objectives; and integrate multiple work initiatives into the overall department goals.
  • Ability to work with autonomy within a controlled environment with shifting priorities and timelines. Ability to work in a collaborative, team environment. Ability to review goals, analyze processes necessary to achieve those goals, and develop techniques and systems required to meet those goals. Often explores new areas and seeks opportunities to apply new knowledge to work.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

May include: Stationary position for an extended period of time, traverse campus/facility as needed, operate machinery such as computer, phone, copy machine; exposure to cold or hot temperatures.

COMPENSATION: The expected hiring range for this position is $87,000 to $121,809 per year, commensurate with experience. Consideration will be given to experience that exceeds the listed requirements.
