Montgomery College has an immediate need for a full-time Prospect Research Specialist in the Development and Alumni Affairs Department.  The work schedule is Monday-Friday, 8:30 am-5:00 pm. This is a non-bargaining, exempt, grade 29 position. Montgomery College promotes and creates a working and learning environment rooted in the basic tenets of fairness, diversity, and inclusiveness.

The Prospect Research Specialist provides in-depth proactive and reactive research on prospects, carefully analyzing prospect’s potential connection to College initiatives and philanthropic interest and capacity. The incumbent supports the Development and Alumni Relations team with strategic plans for each prospect composed of next steps and expected outcomes. The incumbent works with the Advancement Services Manager and other team members in developing and maintaining reporting systems for accurately tracking progress and outcomes of prospect cultivation and solicitation, as well as developing and documenting database management best practices, processes, and workflows, including creating and maintaining training materials.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Identify, research, qualify, and rate prospective donors to the College.
  • Search multiple resources, including newspapers, magazines, library databases, on-line databases, proprietary databases, websites, public records, speeches, annual reports, Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) documents, tax returns, stock reports, company and foundation published documents, etc.
  • Support development and alumni officers in developing fundraising strategies and conduct periodic development officer portfolio reviews.
  • Provide primary oversight and management of prospect and moves management components of the fundraising database.
  • Assign and reassign prospects and donors as needed.
  • Generate reports and train members to generate reports and interpret dashboards. 
  • Create targeted invitation lists for various College functions that support the fundraising and friend-raising goals of the College: annual and special events/donor events such as building openings and key mailings.
  • Participate in tracking information and progress of prospects, donors, and VIP members of the community at large.
  • Pull useful information from research for inclusion in the College’s fundraising database including biographic, professional, and financial data.
  • Update information in the database, such as returned mail, CEOs of area companies, current and former elected officials, board members, and community leaders.
  • Monitor regional business and philanthropic trends. Synthesize and communicate this information to the Development and Alumni Relations team.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or an equivalent combination of education, training, certification and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and expertise to perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
  • Training in research methodologies.
  • Three years' experience with prospect research and fundraising database or Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems with training in research methodologies.
  • Knowledge of various prospect research platforms, including internet research and data extraction, fundraising databases, online series, and wealth screening analysis.
  • Knowledge of the fundraising moves management cycle (discovery, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship).
  • Basic knowledge of applicable legal processes.
  • Ability to compile biographies, write briefings, conduct portfolio reviews, and work with development and alumni officers to help them with their prospect pool.
  • Ability to analyze data and present the data to various stakeholders (development officers, college leadership, volunteers, and foundation board members).
  • Skill in prospect research, library, interviewing, and strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Technical/computer skills with word processing, spreadsheets, and other applicable computer software.
  • Ability to be task orientated, to meet deadlines, and work independently.
  • Skill in organization and being attentive to details.
  • Excellent customer skills.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.

Hiring Range $69,668 – $90,580. Initial salary placement is based on candidate experience and internal equity.  Please include a complete resume including all relevant and related work experience.
