Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The IT Manager leads a variety of services that support both the Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology Research (IBBR) IT infrastructure as well as research computing needs. The service portfolio is made up of administrative infrastructure, research infrastructure and support, web development, and helpdesk. Administrative support includes wired and wireless networking, IP telephony, building security and automation, virtual server, and data center management. Research infrastructure includes a local high-performance computing cluster, several petabytes of data storage, dozens of scientific software installations, and support for researcher owned web, database, and storage servers. The IT Manager provides leadership for the portfolio of IT services. The IT Manager manages direct reports who manage the above service portfolios. A hands-on approach will require the IT Manager to have the skills to support all aspects of IBBR’s IT services portfolio.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.

Experience:
  • Five (5) years of professional experience supporting the operations, maintenance, and administration of information technology infrastructure. Five (5) years of direct supervisory experience.
  • Experience in managing IT infrastructure and services in a compliant and regulated environment. Excellent leadership and organizational skills.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Proven experience as an IT Manager or similar role, preferably in a laboratory or other research setting.
  • Strong understanding of computer systems, networks, and databases.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with both technical and non-technical staff.

Physical Demands

Research center environment and general office/laboratory/computer facilities. May be required to travel to IBBR facilities and affiliates in the Washington/Baltimore area. Occasional lifting of computer and related equipment may be required.
