Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Reporting to the Senior Archivist, the Assistant Archivist is primarily responsible for surveying, transferring, inventorying, accessioning, developing an arrangement proposal, and creating access for newly acquired collections at The David C. Driskell Center, including the papers of art administrator Dr. Terrie S. Rouse-Rosario and the Weusi Art Collective. The Assistant Archivist also oversees other archival processing tasks for select collections currently being processed or incoming (including the Alonzo Davis Collection, Michael D. Harris Collection, Robin Holder Collection, and a recent acquisition from the artist Dewey Crumpler) with support from the Senior Archivist. The Assistant Archivist helps to train and supervises a small group of undergraduate and graduate students who assist with processing tasks (inventorying, rehousing of materials, and creating folders). They also assist the Senior Archivist in creating access to collections, including creating or editing finding aids; cataloging collections in The Driskell Center’s content management system (CMS); and handling onsite and remote reference requests, especially those related to the Rouse-Rosario Collection. The Assistant Archivist also helps develop marketing materials for The Driskell Center Archives (press releases, social media posts). This is a one-year contract position with a possibility for renewal up to three years.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: 
  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a related field.

Experience: 
  • At least one year of processing archival experience in an academic institution, university archive, and/or museum library.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated experience writing grants or participating in the administration of existing grants.
  • Knowledge of best practices and current trends related to archives references and outreach.
  • Knowledge of archival content management systems and technologies. Experience with ArchivesSpace strongly preferred.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to set and modify work priorities independently.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, including public speaking and scholarly communications.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • ALA accredited Master’s degree in Library Science or equivalent graduate degree in archive administration from an accredited college/university.
  • Experience with artist archives.
  • Knowledge of African-American art history.

Additional Information:

Salary: $50K-56K commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Candidates must be able to provide proof of eligibility to work in the USA. No visa sponsorship is offered for this position.
