About the Department

The Department of Plant and Microbial Biology supports teaching, research, and extension programs in fundamental plant biology and microbiology, including basic and applied research, teaching graduate and undergraduate courses, mentoring graduate and undergraduate students, and outreach to state and national clientele.

Essential Job Duties

This position will provide student services and administrative support for the Microbiology interdisciplinary graduate program. The position will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following job duties:

Program Management:
  • Tracking of sources of student funding support across depts/colleges
  • Generating a tracking and information system to ensure that all students in the program are appointed correctly
  • Identifying the students who need TA support
  • Coordinating with the DGP/ADGP to help place students into appropriate TA positions
  • Actively track student progress, including checking for compliance with new curriculum requirements that are under development, enhanced communication with students at milestone timepoints to ensure committee meeting.
  • Gather information in support of the development of new endeavors and organizing related activities
  • Manage opportunities for graduate student internships
  • Alumni tracking and relationship management
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for wellness issues, and monitor student well-being via anonymized surveys

Information/Records Administration
  • Tracking of student progress toward degree and student wellness.
  • Track applicant pools to determine effectiveness of recruiting methods

Coordination – Operation
  • Planning program-wide social scientific engagement activities.
  • Coordinate program-wide faculty meetings at least twice a year.
  • Coordinate social scientific events.
  • Develop recruitment materials
  • Attend events, meetings and visit institutions to present program information
  • Coordinate with related MB programs and the graduate school for recruiting

Please note that this position is for 30 hours per week.

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
 
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft office or similar software
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Able to work well as a member of a team
  • Strong oral presentation skills
  • Strong writing of concise informational items
  • Able to work consistently and accurately in managing programmatic details

  • Previous experience with administration of student programs
  • Self-driven and motivated to learn and grow on the job
  • Proactive problem solver
  • Experience with the generation or implementation of data management systems or project management systems
