Position Summary

Reporting to the Editorial Director, the Acquisitions Editor advocates for the role of critical thinking and scholarship in editorial practice by seeking out, nurturing, and promoting emerging as well as eminent authors who publish in a range of fields.

 

The role requires managing two separate but intertwined relationships: the relationship between the manuscript/book and the Press, and the relationship between the author and the Press. This requires balancing interpersonal interactions with a keen sense of detail and close attention to deadlines and timetables while working across the four major departments at the Press: editorial, production, marketing, and business.

 

Essential Functions        

  • Serves as the in-house editor for four Fordham-based book series: Catholic Practice in the Americas, the Fordham Series in Medieval Studies, Orthodox Christianity and Contemporary Thought, and Medieval Philosophy: Texts and Studies.
  • Manages the Disruptive Cartographers: Doing Theology Latinamente series.
  • Serves as in-house editor for volumes in the Comparative Theology: Thinking Across Traditions, Transdisciplinary Theological Colloquia, and Christian Arabic Texts in Translation series.
  • Develops and acquires the 15-volume series, Past Light on Present Lives: Theology, Ethics, and Spirituality.
  • Acquires 3 to 5 non-series titles per year in Religion and Theology and other subject areas of interest to the Press.
  • Represents the Press at various scholarly meetings, including but not limited to:
    • American Academy of Religion/Society of Biblical Literature
    • Catholic Theological Society of America
    • Drew University Transdisciplinary Theological Colloquium
  • Obtains and tracks peer reviewers for manuscripts under consideration.
  • Schedules and organizes materials and agendas for monthly meetings with the Press Board of Directors.
  • Assists in facilitating bi-weekly editorial meetings, distributing book proposals for discussion by the editorial and marketing team.

Additional Functions      

  • Serves as an In-house editor for the Perspectives in Continental Philosophy series.
  • Serves as an In-house coordinator for Journal publications.
  • Serves as an In-house coordinator for distributions and University-related publications. These have included the following:
    • Curran Center for American Catholic Studies
    • Fordham’s Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs (Refuge Press)
    • Fordham University Institute on Religion, Law, and Lawyer’s Work
    • The Bronx Museum
    • The Hudson River Museum

 

Required Qualifications: Education and Experience        

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Humanities or Social Sciences
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in assisting in acquiring and editing academic books.

 

Required Qualifications: Knowledge and Skills     

  • Proven ability to acquire and market boundary-breaking scholarship in the humanities and social sciences.
  • Demonstrated skill in improving workflow and efficiencies.
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Successful candidates should have a knowledge of and commitment to the goals of Jesuit Education.

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Advanced degree in the Humanities or Social Sciences
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in assisting in acquiring and editing academic books.

 

Minimum Starting Salary: $65,000

 

Maximum Starting Salary: $70,000

 

Note: Salary is commensurate with qualifications, experience, and skills.
