Position Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs for Diversity and Inclusion, the Assistant Director in the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) oversees the daily operations of the Rose Hill campus while supporting initiatives across both campuses alongside the Assistant Vice

President for Student Affairs for Diversity and Inclusion (AVP).

 

This individual assists with various Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging programs and initiatives for OMA while supervising part-time staff across both campuses. This is inclusive of cross cultural training and workshops primarily for students, diverse student engagement through committees and clubs, and supporting Fordham to create a welcoming and inclusive

environment with the aim of increasing student engagement and retention.

 

The Assistant Director also partners with other departments within the Division of Student Affairs and across the University on various initiatives to support diverse student populations while increasing their overall sense of belonging.

 

This individual will work with the AVP on building sustainable programs and initiatives in partnership with the Office of International Services to support the retention and graduation of International Students

 

Essential Functions        

  • Actualizes department and divisional goals to promote and develop diversity and inclusion initiatives for the community in line with Fordham’s mission as a culturally diverse university in the Jesuit, Catholic tradition.
  • Supervises the OMA graduate interns and oversee day to day functions of the Rose Hill office.
  • Assists with the management of the departmental budget and additional funds inclusive of and submitting monthly corporate card expense reports.
  • Works with the AVP and campus partners where appropriate in the creation of new initiatives to impact diverse student retention and graduation rates.
  • Some initiatives may include: a Pre-Orientation program for students with intersectional identities, a Peer Mentoring Program that would aim to support sophomores and juniors, and diverse student retreats.
  • Works with the AVP to build new sustainable programs and initiatives in partnership with the Office of International Services and other areas at Fordham to improve engagement efforts and the retention and graduation rates of International Students.
  • Oversees the coordination and facilitation of the University-wide Racial Solidarity Network and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) and Ally Network of Support training programs.
  • Utilizes various identity and diversity theories to teach and educate Fordham staff and students through ongoing training and workshops, including Resident Directors, Resident Assistants/Resident First Year Mentors, Commuter Assistants/Commuter First Year Mentors, Orientation
  • Leaders, Rose Hill and Lincoln Center Ambassadors, Global Transition Assistants, Career Ambassadors, Ram Van Drivers, Global Outreach, and more.
  • Oversees the coordination and the facilitation of Civility Core Program sessions for new students with Student Affairs partners.
  • Assists the current programs and services offered through OMA that aide in creating a welcoming and inclusive campus environment inclusive of: New Student Orientation related events, the BIPOC Student Mixer at RH, and the Diversity Graduation Celebrations for Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi Americans (APIDA), Black, Latine, and LGBTQ graduating seniors.
  • Assists OMA staff with campus-wide cultural heritage programming including but not limited to Latine Heritage, LGBTQ History, Native and Indigenous History, Middle Eastern and North African Heritage, Black History, Women’s Herstory, and Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi (APIDa) Heritage.
  • Serves as advisor/advocate for historically underrepresented student populations and as a support person and referral source regarding academic, financial, personal, spiritual and social concerns of underrepresented students to ensure that diverse student communities utilize the full scope of University services.
  • Teaches a section of the Student Affairs First Year Formation seminar during the fall semester.
  • Works with the OMA staff to actualize visibility and marketing strategies inclusive of social media, the website, and Fordham publications, etc.
  • Assists with part-time staff recruitment and selection processes.
  • Assists with the assessment process for OMA including evaluating programs that address the needs of multicultural students at the University, analyzing assessment data for inclusion in department reports, and completing reports in a timely manner.
  • Collaborates and partners with departments on campus to capture intersectional experiences in programming inclusive of, but not limited to: Campus Ministry (religion and spirituality), Disability Services (ability and neurodiversity), Counseling and Psychological Services (DEI mental health), and the Career Center (DEIB in the workplace).
  • Researches information for office initiatives, including but not limited to: anti-bias/bias-reduction curriculum, student leadership, dialogues and student programs to encourage intercultural engagement and interaction.
  • Represents the division by participating in the Office of Admission DEI events and other DEIB related initiatives at the University

Guides work of other employees who perform essentially the same work and/or student workers. Organizes, sets priorities, schedules and reviews work, but is generally not responsible for final decisions in hiring, performance management or compensation.

 

Additional Functions      

  • Represents OMA or have an OMA staff member participate in professional development experiences like the AJCU Diversity Equity Network and other similar DEI opportunities when possible.
  • Attends Student Life Council meetings at RH to enhance communication and collaborative programming efforts across campus divisions and departments, when needed.

 

Required Qualifications: Education and Experience        

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of two years experience (can be part-time) in developing and managing multicultural education programs and working with diverse college student populations.

 

Required Qualifications: Knowledge and Skills     

  • Must be a strong leader who has a passion for diversity and inclusion work within Higher Education, specifically in a Catholic, Jesuit environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work with a variety of constituents.
  • Possess exceptional written communication skills.
  • Be able to demonstrate creativity and flexibility in working on various projects.
  • Ability to apply an intersectional lens to the work.
  • Successful candidates should have a knowledge of and commitment to the goals of Jesuit Education.

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, Human Development, or diversity related field.

 

Minimum Starting Salary: $62,400

 

Maximum Starting Salary: $64,000

 

Note: Salary is commensurate with qualifications, experience, and skills.
