Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Veteran Student Life STEM Tutor Program seeks passionate and qualified student tutors to support veterans in their pursuit of STEM degrees.

Do you have a strong academic background in STEM and a desire to empower veterans in their academic journey? If so, this is the perfect opportunity for you!

Responsibilities:
  • Conduct individual and small group tutoring sessions in STEM subjects (physics, math, chemistry, engineering, compute science, etc.) based on veteran student needs and availability.
  • Hold weekly office hours to provide a consistent point of contact for student support.
  • Track and report tutoring hours and topics covered each week.
  • Communicate effectively and promptly with students, program staff, and supervisors.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • Current undergraduate or graduate student at the University of Maryland.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and advise peers in a supportive and productive manner.
  • Strong academic record with a minimum grade of “B” in each course you wish to tutor.
  • Recommendation letters from instructors for each course you wish to tutor.
  • Overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills to connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Ideal candidates can tutor in multiple STEM gateway courses and some upper-level STEM undergraduate courses.

Additional Information:

Undergraduate students can earn $16.50/hr and graduate students can earn $20/hr. We ask the tutors not to exceed 10-12 hours weekly.
