Job Description: The Professional Advisor’s primary role is to provide individual advising to new students. Under the supervision of the Director of Advising, the advisor works with students to provide services, support, and guidance; refers students to appropriate community college support services and learning resources; and meets with students who are experiencing academic difficulty. In addition, the Advisor helps students with course selection, registration, and enrollment.

The Professional Advisor will serve as a member of the professional advising team and work in partnership with student services and faculty to ensure students stay on course with their requirements. The Professional Advisor participates in community college events, and professional development, as well as serves on community college committees.

Essential Job Functions:
Essential job functions may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Provide professional advising, registration, registration assistance, and support to new students using a case management approach.
  • Attend provided training to become knowledgeable of Roanoke-Chowan Community College resources, policies, and processes.
  • Function as a team member and work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and leadership.
  • Serve as an advocate for professional success and career development by forging relationships with faculty, staff, and students at R-CCC.
  • Monitor advisees’ progress and provide frequent and consistent individualized feedback.
  • Ensure compliance and confidentiality with all policies and procedures.
  • Provide friendly, timely, accurate, and professional customer service to students, staff, and faculty.
  • Support students in addressing barriers.
  • Assist with assigning and transiting students to faculty advisors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience in providing advisement/counseling in a post-secondary setting.
  • Must demonstrate interpersonal skills applicable to working with a diverse population.
  • Must be able to operate a computer equipped with software such as Microsoft Office Suite, Email, and other software related to the position.
