Job Description:

Title: Dean of Business, Legal Studies, and Public Service

Unit: Non-Unit Professional (NUP)

Department: Academic Affairs - Business, Legal Studies and Public Service

Reports to: Provost and VP of Academic and Student Affairs

Date: October 18, 2024

 

General Summary: Under the direction of the Provost and Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs, the Dean of Business, Legal Studies and Public Service is responsible for providing academic leadership and administrative oversight for the Business, Legal Studies and Public Service division. In addition to oversight over the division's faculty and staff, the Dean will also play a critical role as Middlesex Community College becomes a Hispanic-Serving Institute (HSI) and in achievement of the College's RISE 15 student success metrics aimed at completion. The Dean will regularly make reports to the Academic and Student Affairs leadership team as well as the President's Leadership Council and other stakeholders as required. In addition, working with the Dean of Education and K-16 Partnerships, the Dean will provide consistent communication about potential transfer initiatives. The Dean will be responsible for the development of relevant new programs initiatives within the division, as well as oversight of new proposed partnerships such as the prison education program.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership and oversight for planning, assessment, development, and administration of the personnel, curriculum, programs, operations, policies, facilities and equipment associated with the Academic Division.
  • Ensures the integrity, excellence, and ongoing development of the academic programs and disciplines within the Academic Division while responding to workforce needs.
  • Promotes inclusive excellence and equity-centered leadership for diverse students, faculty, staff and community members.
  • Establishes, maintains, and monitors policies that provide for optimal educational practices in the division.
  • Provides leadership, encouragement, and supervision to Chairs/Coordinators to ensure the development and implementation of institutional and divisional initiatives and policies.
  • Executes the academic vision of the Provost by setting a divisional direction and implementing college and divisional activities consistent with the college's mission and strategic direction.
  • Functions as part of the Provost's leadership team, serving on the Academic and Student Affairs Council and the Workforce Development Council.
  • Administers specific components of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, including reviewing the workload for full-time faculty, evaluating faculty and department chairs, making recommendations for contract renewal, promotion, tenure, and sabbatical requests.
  • Determines priorities for budgetary expenditures; develops division budget and technology requests, monitors budgets and electronically approves purchase requests.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable federal and state laws and accrediting bodies' regulations and criteria.
  • Ensures the integration/coordination of programs and initiatives within and across Academic divisions.
  • Provides oversight of divisional articulation agreements to ensure appropriate educational and career pathways for divisional programs.
  • Develops and oversees grants to support divisional activities.
  • Collaborates with personnel of other departments and divisions to ensure effective program implementation.
  • Resolves student and faculty issues; collaborates with others as necessary to achieve resolution. Oversees all Faculty and Student Grievance procedures and insures adherence to college Affirmative Action policies.
  • Promotes and maintains responsive community relations. Represents the division and college in external activities and initiatives.
  • Serves as college representative on the board of the CTI Entrepreneurship Center and the Micro-Loan Committee.
  • Serve as the College's liaison to the Middlesex Community College Law Center
  • Provide leadership for the Prison Education Program
  • Accountable directly or indirectly through subordinate managers for all Business, Legal Studies and Public Service division staff. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Middlesex Community College's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

 

Requirements:

  • Master's degree and seven to ten years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of college administration and the Business, Legal Studies and Public Service professions
  • Commitment to the mission and philosophy of the college with a strong understanding and respect for the strategic mission of the college and related divisional goals and activities.
  • Leadership, planning, management, organizational, and supervisory skills.
  • Ability to think strategically and to develop relevant and realistic plans, programs, and goals for the college.
  • Ability to recognize college-wide priorities and work cooperatively to support their accomplishment.
  • Financial management and negotiation skills
  • Ability to market programs and ideas; to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; to establish positive public relations, and to work collaboratively with people to set and achieve common goals.
  • Experience in curriculum development.
  • Ability to interpret other legal and administrative requirements related to the division.
  • Experience with equity-minded work and/or understanding of individuals of diverse identities such as race, ethnicity, socioeconomic level, sexual orientation, veterans, and individuals with different academic preparation levels and varying physical and learning abilities.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree

Salary Range: $119,000 - $129,000 actual salary commensurate with academic background and experience. Employees of Middlesex Community College are considered employees of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and receive benefits, which include:

Location: Bedford campus with occasional travel to Lowell as needed

 

Hours: 37.5 per week, schedule to be determined upon hire. This position will be eligible for a maximum of two days of telework in accordance with the College's telework policy.
