The Sport Psychology Program, a collaborative effort between the Department of Athletics and the University Counseling Center, is a critical element of this community. In fostering holistic formation, mental/emotional health and well-being are key pieces of the puzzle. If student-athletes are struggling in their personal life, it is likely to influence their athletic/academic performance, and vice versa. Although the provision of individual and group counseling services are essential parts of the job, your impact extends far beyond the therapy room. Engaging with coaches, administrators, sports medicine, and athletic department staff to equip them with tools necessary to promote mental health and high performance is central to advancing our mission. Sport psychologists are situated to creatively call upon their knowledge and skills to support student-athletes, bolster the Notre Dame community, and shape the evolving Sport Psychology Program to best meet the unique clinical and performance-based needs of the department.

Job Responsibilities:

The Sport Psychologist reports directly to the Assistant Director of the University Counseling Center and Sports Psychology Program Director. This position is responsible for providing counseling and sport psychology services within a multidisciplinary environment consisting of Sports Medicine (i.e., team physicians, athletic trainers), Strength and Conditioning, and Sports Nutrition. Through close collaboration, this team of professionals provides integrated and comprehensive care that addresses the entire spectrum of student athlete wellbeing to enhance their personal, social, emotional, academic, and athletic growth and performance.

The Sport Psychologist is involved in the following professional activities: the provision of individual and group psychological services to a diverse student athlete population presenting with a broad range of concerns including psychological, social, developmental, or other difficulties that interfere with a student’s academic and athletic success; the design, execution, and evaluation of psychoeducational programming for the ND Athletic Department often in conjunction with the GLD Center; the implementation of individual and team-based performance enhancement interventions; the provision of clinical supervision to post-doctoral candidates or to doctoral interns within the UCC’s APA Accredited doctoral internship program; and administrative activities to support the Sport Psychology Program. As a member of the UCC staff, the Sport Psychologist also attends UCC staff meetings, participates in UCC professional development activities, and is available to assist the UCC, as needed, in the provision of clinical services to the general student body.

Anticipated start in early Fall semester.

• Doctoral degree in Counseling or Clinical Psychology from an APA accredited Program preferred, with licensure as a Psychologist and Health Service Provider in Psychology within the first year of employment.
• Evidence of outstanding skills in clinical assessment, psychotherapy, crisis management, and psycho-education.
• Two years of experience (can include internship) providing mental health counseling and performance enhancement services to athletes, preferably in a university or college counseling center setting.
• Interest in engaging in the typical work of a university counseling center, including short-term counseling, group counseling, crisis work, outreach, consultation, and training.
• Experience and interest in supporting and empowering individuals from underrepresented and marginalized communities.
• Proficiency in addressing all aspects of students’ intersecting identities within the context of psychotherapy.
• Ability to provide supervision to psychologists-in-training.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
• Ability to problem-solve, handle sensitive information and nuanced situations.
• A solid understanding of boundaries and professional ethics.

• Applied Association of Sport Psychology – Certified Mental Performance Consultant.
• Bilingual or multilingual.

Monday – Friday 8:00-5:00 with flexible scheduling to accommodate routine evening and weekend hours for athletic department practices and events.
