FAQ Job Title
Sport Psychologist, Embedded in Athletics
Job Description
The University of Notre Dame Department of Athletics has an ambitious mission – to cultivate the holistic formation of student-athletes in their pursuit of excellence. At Notre Dame, participating in intercollegiate athletics is more than engaging in training and competition — it is a central component of a student’s education and development. To best fulfill this mission, we aim to maintain an environment that allows student-athletes the experience of feeling both challenged and supported, in order to best foster individualized growth.
We know growth doesn’t always come easy and it certainly doesn’t occur in a silo. When you come to Notre Dame, you are joining a community rooted in support, collaboration, and commitment to a shared mission. Regardless of your role, you will be challenged to consider ways that you can innovate and improve, not only for yourself but for the greater university community.
The Sport Psychology Program, a collaborative effort between the Department of Athletics and the University Counseling Center, is a critical element of this community. In fostering holistic formation, mental/emotional health and well-being are key pieces of the puzzle. If student-athletes are struggling in their personal life, it is likely to influence their athletic/academic performance, and vice versa. Although the provision of individual and group counseling services are essential parts of the job, your impact extends far beyond the therapy room. Engaging with coaches, administrators, sports medicine, and athletic department staff to equip them with tools necessary to promote mental health and high performance is central to advancing our mission. Sport psychologists are situated to creatively call upon their knowledge and skills to support student-athletes, bolster the Notre Dame community, and shape the evolving Sport Psychology Program to best meet the unique clinical and performance-based needs of the department.
The Notre Dame Athletics community is committed to building a diverse workforce passionate about maximizing the student-athlete experience. Our pillars of Education; Excellence; Faith; Tradition; and Community guide us in the work we do each day. We are eager to attract, recruit, and retain individuals who positively contribute to a collaborative, inclusive working environment where all may thrive.
Building on the University’s Spirit of Inclusion, we are committed to the work needed to cultivate sustainable progress and change. As a prospective member of
Notre Dame Athletics, we encourage you to apply if you embrace, embody, and demonstrate a commitment to the aforementioned values.
