The Associate Athletic Director for Policy, Equity and Legal Affairs (Associate AD) supports the assignment of both the Senior Deputy Athletics Director for Industry Engagement, Legal and Policy (Senior Deputy) and the Faculty Athletics Representative (
FAR) with a focus on the following areas of responsibility:
Policy functions: - Direct Notre Dame’s policy efforts in all contexts, including strategic leadership of internal Athletics Department policy initiatives, identifying applicable institutional policies and educating Athletic Department staff on matters that impact the department and engaging with external conference and national governance entities on policy matters. Specific duties include directing all policy-related efforts of the Athletic Department, including policy development, revision, implementation, education, reporting, documentation and audits, to include: 1) consulting with Athletic Department units in the development and implementation of policies and guidelines; 2) revising and directing implementation of Athletics Department policies and institutional athletically-related policies; 3) analyzing data and suggesting changes; and 4) developing education; and managing documentation and audits, as appropriate.
- Engage with all assignments of the Faculty Board on Athletics (FBA) and the Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR). Specifically, this position supports the work of the FBA and the Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) through the comprehensive management of all FBA’s affairs, including: 1) meeting agendas and preparing materials; 2) researching and analyzing complex matters presented to the FBA; 3) engaging with campus colleagues on behalf of the FAR and FBA; 4) ensuring Athletics Department awareness of and compliance with all FBA policies and directives; 5) serving as the Athletics Department initial contact for all FBA matters; and 6) assisting the FAR with ACC and NCAA matters.
- Engage with other campus and department partners on issues and initiatives to support the development, implementation and continued compliance with policies and best practices related to the effective administration of the Athletics Department. Specific examples include: 1) developing mandatory department educational initiatives (e.g., NCAA Board of Governors Campus Sexual Violence Policy etc.); 2) identifying and gathering key campus partners to address governance and policy changes (e.g., obligation to provide conduct information on incoming and transfer student-athletes, etc.); and 3) developing collaborative protocols to facilitate effective communication on changes to facilitate FBA operations (e.g., graduate school program admissions communications, etc.)
- Lead the department on national issues related to policy and governance, working closely with the ACC and the NCAA to accomplish this assignment. In this role, develops new legislative concepts that further Notre Dame’s vision for intercollegiate athletics and advises on policy implications associated with the implementation of NCAA/Conference/Federal regulations (e.g. NIL policy advice, etc).
Equity functions:
- Manages an ambitious ongoing review and analysis of gender equity, which targets compliance with Office of Civil Rights (OCR) guidelines on an ongoing basis. Review and analysis includes a focus on participation, financial aid and all key program areas. This assignment requires: 1) evaluating, assessing and auditing the Athletics Department’s compliance efforts with Title IX rules and policies; 2) collaborating with campus partners to develop analytical and management tools to assist in a comprehensive review; 3) recommending creative future opportunities to lead the industry in the gender equity area; 4) identifying future benchmarking standards and analysis; and 5) working jointly with the Senior Deputy Athletics Director and General Counsel staff to develop strategic recommendations for future implementation. In addition, this assignment includes reviewing current OCR/Title IX investigations and associated case law and gathering/organizing/sharing relevant data and information points to inform the Athletic Director on potential risks and opportunities.
Legal Affairs functions:
- Works closely with the Office of General Counsel (GC) on legal and policy matters impacting the Athletics Department and the industry, including assisting in the identification of potential legal issues and serving as a designated department contact to resolve matters in an appropriate manner.
Other Duties:
- Participates in identifying and maximizing strategic opportunities to engage with campus partners, including support units and academic colleges, on industry-related initiatives and issues. Current opportunities include: supervising field work of externs as part of law school class and teaching designated subject matter; and supporting the work of the Senior Deputy Athletics Director with industry partners, such as LEAD1, NACDA, Women Leaders and others.
- Provides executive-level support for the Senior Deputy and FAR, as follows: attending meetings on behalf of; performing follow-up action items; assisting in the duties of the FAR, such as reviewing and approving teams schedules and class misses; reviewing and drafting changes to FBA policies; participating in other high-level matters related to the academic and general well-being of student-athletes; generally assisting in the duties of the Senior Deputy; and serving as the representative of the Senior Deputy or FAR if the Senior Deputy or FAR is unavailable.
- Special Projects: Responsible for executing high-level special projects and other duties assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- JD required
- Excellent verbal and written skills.
- Fluent in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Drive functions
- Ability to research, analysis, and benchmark
- Familiarity with intercollegiate athletics industry and Higher Ed administration
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong technological expertise in programs such as ARMS
- Expertise in project management
- 5-7 years experience in Intercollegiate Athletics
