Research Program Assistant
Job Description
The Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking a Research Program Assistant to work under the direct supervision of the Research Program Manager. As part of an investigator-initiated research project on hepatitis C, will assist in the day-to-day logistical and operational tasks of a research study. Will interact with the investigators, collaborators, and patients in a research environment. This person will be writing, running, and analyzing standard and non-standard reports. Will also assist in carrying out research in accordance with good clinical practices in such activities as obtaining informed consent, data and specimen collection, and patient follow-up over time. Responsible for the participant enrollment, organization, entry, and maintenance and accuracy of all clinical research data for a pilot randomized controlled trial.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Maintains good working knowledge of all assigned protocols and reporting requirements.
- Adheres to all protocol requirements to ensure the validity of the clinical research data.
- Run routine and ad hoc reports from databases.
- Interact with clinicians and other gatekeepers to access the patient population.
- Recruit research participants.
- Interview patients.
- Verifies patient eligibility by comparing patient history with protocol requirements.
- Collects, enters, and compiles clinical data from a variety of sources.
- Schedule follow-up visits.
- Enter data into a computer database.
- Clean data using computer software to ensure accuracy in preparation of tables.
- Generate and summarize data into reports to share with PI and Research Program Manager.
- Maintain paper and computerized research files.
- Meets regularly with research team to review data accuracy and overall study progress.
- With assistance, prepares and submits annual renewal requests, amendments and adverse event reports with clinical input according to IRB and Sponsor requirements.
- Prepare mandatory reports and documents/protocols.
- Prepare for and participate in audits and monitoring of studies.
- Assist in preparation of IRB protocols and related documents.
Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Must be comfortable approaching and talking to eligible emergency department patients.
- Must be comfortable collecting saliva or fingerstick blood samples from patients (preferred).
- Must be comfortable performing rapid HIV and HCV testing on specimens collected from patients (preferred).
- Proficiency in the use of computers, including software applications, databases, mathematical and statistical tools, spreadsheets, and word processing.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Independent and self-motivated.
- Highly organized and detail oriented.
- Ability to manage multiple and competing priorities.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated strong, positive interpersonal skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively across disciplines and within a variety of cultures.
- Bilingual (proficient in both English and Spanish is preferred) but Spanish is not mandatory.
Work Schedule/Hours
- This position will be working up to 19 hours a week.
- Must be available to work 4-8-hour shifts at a time, between the hours of 7:00 am and midnight, seven (7) days of the week.
- Must be flexible and available to work some evenings and weekends.

Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.
- Some related experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
- One year of related experience in clinical trials/medical research.

Starting Salary Range: $15.40 - $23.25 HRLY ($18,772 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
