Research Development Officer

Job Description

The Research Development Team within the Provost’s Office is seeking a Research Development Officer who will support the needs of the social science research community across Johns Hopkins, including proactively locating funding opportunities and convening project teams—with a particular emphasis on empirical and/or computational projects. This position will be expected to work closely with departments in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and faculty in other divisions working in related disciplines.


This position is fully funded for three years. While this position is considered remote, the selected candidate should be local to Baltimore/DC for required in-person presentations, meetings and events.


Reporting to the Associate Director for Research Development, the Research Development Officer will engage with faculty and divisional leadership, host meetings and workshops, and facilitate and encourage collaboration.


Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Regularly meet with faculty who work in the social sciences at Hopkins.
  • Find gaps/weaknesses in research practice norms and strategically look for ways to address/resolve them.
  • Proactively locate funding opportunities on sponsor websites and PIVOT.
  • Engage with sponsors of funding opportunities in this field.
  • Connect with researchers at JHU in related disciplines.
  • Look for ways to match researchers with each other as appropriate to apply for funding together.
  • Regularly convene teams of researchers that could work together on a particular funding opportunity.
  • Host and lead monthly meetings and workshops about funding opportunities.
  • Attend sponsor-hosted webinars, townhalls, etc. about open or upcoming award programs.

Additional Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • High comfort level with public speaking and presenting to leadership.
  • Ability to make independent judgments and to act on decisions daily.
  • Ability to provide leadership, management and training to the sponsored research team.
  • Ability to work with flexibility on several tasks simultaneously and to meet various concurrent deadlines.
  • Thorough knowledge of external federal guidelines/procedures for grants and contracts, including NIH, NSF, DOD and NASA.
  • Strong communication skills as well as tact and discretion.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of payroll/personnel and budget information.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree required.
  • Five years of related experience in sponsored research, preferably in an academic or medical setting. 
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
