CO Nurse Practitioner
Job Description
The department of Otolaryngology is seeking a CO Nurse Practitioner who will work in an outpatient clinic setting both independently (after a period of supervised training and skills acquisition) and collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary health team focused on providing comprehensive care to adult and pediatric patients with ear disorders. Typical clinical scenarios will include hearing loss meeting candidacy criteria for cochlear implantation, other degrees of hearing loss, inner ear disorders of hearing and vestibular sensation (“balance”), acoustic neuroma/vestibular schwannoma, cholesteatoma, otitis externa, cerumen impaction and other ear disorders. This NP will work primarily with the neuro-otology division and Johns Hopkins Listening Center’s cochlear implant program under the direction of Charles C. Della Santina MD PhD. This individual will be responsible for making independent decisions regarding patient care and must exercise professional judgment and decision-making.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Essential Job Skills and Functions
- Clinic-based evaluation and management of patients with symptoms of hearing and vestibular disorders.
- Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively and efficiently with patients, patient family members and all members of the interdisciplinary health care team.
- Ability to competently perform (after a period of supervised training) clinic-based ear procedures requiring use of binocular ear microscopy and bimanual use of instruments in the ear canal.
- Ability to learn and apply knowledge of ear and neurotologic anatomy, physiology and disorders.
- Ability to function effectively in a fluid, dynamic and rapidly changing environment.
- Must be self-directed and possess mature judgment and motivation.
Communications
- Must be able to communicate clearly in spoken and written English.
- Must efficiently use the Epic electronic medical record system (after a period of training).
- Scientific writing skills are valued.
Additional Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- The position is almost exclusively focused on otology and neuro-otology, and prior training and experience in these disciplines is highly desirable.
- Although not required, fluency in other languages such as American Sign Language, Spanish, Mandarin or Russian is advantageous.
- Must successfully complete all necessary Epic training courses and other applicable clinical software systems. Prior experience with Epic is advantageous.
- Must complete all required HIPAA and other specified online training courses.
- Other computer or other special needs for the position: Operates personal computer and/or laptop to access email, computerized scheduling and documentation databases, and other basic office support software.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree in nursing from an accredited school.
- Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner.
- Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing.
- Current American Heart CPR certification required.
- Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.
- Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.
- Additional experience may substitute for master's degree, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Three years of related clinical nursing experience.
- Prefer NP who has experience in care of surgical patients.
- History of strong organizational skills, analytical skills, customer service skills, clinical sensitivity, medical terminology, excellent computer skills and the ability to multi-task.
- High level of interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills are also essential.
- Excellent communication, mathematical computation, spelling, and grammar skills.
- Knowledge and compliance of HIPAA rules and regulations in the dissemination of patient Protected Health Information (PHI).
- Experience in the Johns Hopkins system strongly preferred.
- Experience with the EPIC system.
