The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Office of Human Resources is looking for a talented Compensation Specialist to join the team. This position directly collaborates and assists various clients across campus with identifying their compensation needs and finding solutions to issues. Members of the Compensation team will proactively work with their assigned clients to assist with developing plans to achieve their clients’ goals.
The compensation team will assist in analyzing various compensation practices and processes. This will be a great opportunity to work with a great team and a wonderful institution.

REMOTE/HYBRID WORK OPTION AVAILABLE: remote work option of three (3) days/week.

Primary Duties:
- Collaborates with client to determine compensation needs and develop action plans to meet the client’s requests.
Consults with clients to determine effective and efficient organizational structure and resource allocation within budgetary restraints to meet the needs of the unit. - Performs job analysis and job evaluation that includes organizational analysis and hierarchical structure of jobs.
- Recognize the multiple markets in which the University competes for talent; participates in market salary surveys; and conducts market pricing to determine internal and external job value.
- Identifies job descriptions and career ladders to assist clients in designing effective development opportunities with the unit.
- Statistically analyzes compensation data to determine trends and variances. Identifies compensation variances; develops action plans and recommendations; and implements process improvements to enhance data outcomes.
- Reviews new job in anticipation of recruitment to ensure appropriate classification. Based on position-specific information, determines if an existing job description can be used for classification. As necessary, creates new job descriptions or modifies old job descriptions that accurately reflect current roles, responsibilities, and requirements.
- Identifies job descriptions and career ladders to assist clients in designing effective development opportunities with the unit.
- Participates as a member committees, projects, or initiatives. Assist in development of project plans and defining scope of work. May oversee project implementation.
- Performs compensation data integrity analysis and identifies issues and provides recommendations to correct. Follows-up with clients to ensure data is accurate. Continuously reviews processes and identify methods to improve the workflow and timeliness of data exchange.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor's degree.
Experience: Two (2) years of experience in job analysis, job evaluation, or other related human resource experience, to include demonstrated experience in database and spreadsheet tools.
Other: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. In instances where specific education and/or experience is required only directly related education and/or experience may be substituted.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Accomplish responsibilities by applying specialized and theoretical compensation knowledge, principles, and concepts.
- Applies intermediate level compensation knowledge, concepts, principles, and skills of employment laws and requirements. Knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws. Creates solutions to ensure legal and policy compliance.
- Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts and work cooperatively with others and independently.
- Independently manage or administer compensation programs, processes, projects, or resources to assigned clients.
- Ability to resolve issues and significant matters on behalf of management by utilizing independent judgment, discretion, creativity, and analytical thinking within general guidelines and significant interpretation. Independently anticipate needs of clients and resolve non-routine matters and solutions that require considerable analysis and evaluation of various alternatives.
- Skill in effective use of applicable technology/systems such as Oracle HCM, PeopleSoft, Taleo, and Microsoft Office Suite including SharePoint, Outlook, Word, Excel, and Access. Experience with CompAnalyst salary platform or similar salary survey platform. Oracle Cloud experience a plus.

Hiring Range: $75,000 - $86,000.
