Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Position Summary
The Assistant Coordinator of Assistive Technology (AT) is a full time, exempt position at the University of Maryland’s Accessibility and Disability Service (ADS), housed within the Assistive Technology Unit and reporting to the Coordinator of that unit. This role will cross train on tasks in each of the unit’s 3 focal areas, accommodated note taking, assistive technology and alternative text conversions. The Assistant Coordinator will supervise student employees assigned to assist in text conversions. In addition to coordinating the important work of the AT Unit, this role will provide important support to the Accommodated Testing Office operations during high volume testing periods that coincide with low AT unit needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Accommodated Note Taking
  • Respond independently to complex, time sensitive questions about accommodated note taking requests from students and instructors
  • Responsible for troubleshooting and resolving technical issues with both peer note taking and technology based note taking to prevent delays in accommodation delivery.
  • Maintain and compile data related to all accommodated note taking services.
  • Review peer note taker applications and ensure appropriate sample notes are provided.
  • Educate selected peer note takers on required employment paperwork and human resource requirements.
  • Manage student facing and internal facing database management system that coordinates peer note taker requests and applicants/hires.
  • Consult with faculty members and ADS Disability Specialists on note taking concerns and solutions.
  • Utilize critical thinking skills to brainstorm individualized alternative note taking solutions when the selected option is not work or available.

Alternative Text Services
  • Coordinate all alternative text (Alt Text) services, including managing the process of receiving Alt Text referrals.
  • Communicate effectively with ADS students who require Alt Text accommodations.
  • Locate sources for requested textbooks and relevant materials needed for Alt Text services.
  • Supervise student employees assisting with text conversions

Assistive Technology
  • Provide orientation and training to referred students on the use of assistive technology, ensuring they are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills.
  • Independently troubleshoot issues with assistive technology and provide individualized solutions to users.
  • Compile and track data related to assigned assistive technology licenses, usage and user feedback.

Accommodated Testing
  • Provide critical high level support to accommodated testing operations during increased volume periods around midterms and finals.
  • Coordinate with Testing Manager and Coordinator to identify sensitive areas that require additional support and attention to fulfill the mission of the Accommodated Testing Office.

Education:

  • Relevant, extensive, professional work experience will be considered in lieu of the stated minimum degree requirement.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Three (3) years of professional experience in a high volume, time sensitive, detail oriented environment that includes confidential information and the management of relationships with stakeholders.

Additional Information:

Salary range is $52,000 – $58,000.
