Position Title: Program Director

Reports To: Executive Director

Status: Salaried Exempt, Full-time

Location: This is a hybrid position with at least 2 days required in office. Number of in-office days are subject to change. Our office is currently located in downtown San Jose, near San Jose State University which will change when we secure a new workspace. This role may also require being out in the field to support program delivery and develop relationships beyond the 2 days in the office.

Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition (SVBC) is a non-profit membership-based organization founded in 1993 that seeks to build healthy and just communities. We’re proud of the extraordinary impact we’ve had over the past ten years in improving local infrastructure and normalizing bicycling for transportation in San Mateo & Santa Clara Counties. And we’re excited about how much more we can do to solve challenging local and global issues through the humble bicycle. SVBC stands among peer organizations in the nine Bay Area counties as one of the largest bike coalitions in North America. You’ll join a team of approximately 15 core & 15+ ad hoc staff members who are passionate about getting more people on bikes safely. We invest a great deal of time in strengthening relationships and building a high-trust environment where feedback in all directions is welcomed as opportunities to learn. The organization is a non-profit with a start-up culture that values creative problem solving, open communication, and a can-do attitude.

It is also important to highlight that we are a group of folks deeply committed to doing one of the most difficult things on the planet – to get people out of cars and onto bikes to solve some of society’s most intractable problems. Position Summary

You’ll manage a small team of program implementers as well as a larger team of part-time LCIs and bike valets. Program work is mainly funded through grants and contracts. You will oversee the execution of current contracts and help prospect for new funding sources that provide the team flexibility and freedom to stay focused on the organizational goals.

Qualifications

A passion for SVBC’s mission to build healthy and just communities.

Minimum of five years of experience teaching and leading bike programs such as bike-education classes or fun rides and more.

Management experience and demonstrable success with inspiring staff and volunteers to joyfully accomplish great things.

Specifically, the person in this role would:

Position the organization as a thought leader in bike programming in Silicon Valley. Have knowledge and expertise in effective behavior change techniques and specifically biking programs.

Grants/contract management

Write grant and contract proposals that make clear the importance of bike programs and connect metrics and outcomes to the funding available.

Negotiate contracts and invoice/report to funding agencies

Coordinate and manage deliverables under different grants and contracts and creates a schedule of programs with the team.

Staff Management

Manage a team of 3+ staff as well as temporary employees and volunteers – have regular check in meetings, approve timesheets, conduct annual reviews, etc.

Train staff, modeling skills and processes that help people make meaningful behavior change.

Be responsible for recruiting, hiring, and retention of program staff needed to accomplish organizational goals.

Make decisions about staffing for projects and programs, matching skills with tasks.

Manage and oversee the team budget, along with budgets under different grants and contracts.

Manage all aspects of bike programming including classes and rides, guiding the team to be able to coordinate and deliver the same. Work with the team to create and coordinate a squad of part-time employees and volunteers to deliver SVBC programs. Works with the team to see how program work can support or intersect with other org-wide departments and goals.

Step in to lead program work when necessary.

Oversee our signature event, Bike To Wherever Days/Bike Month - With partners from across the 9 county Bay Area and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, inspire residents throughout the region to pledge to ride and try biking to everyday destinations.

Communication Skills: You possess fluent communication skills such that you can easily present or discuss any programming related work with internal and external partners. You provide necessary guidance to the team on their communication skills.

Teamwork and Collaboration: You ensure inter- and intra- department teamwork and alignment on meeting strategic goals. You advise ED on issues related to staff culture and morale; review staff surveys and address issues.

Creativity and Innovation: You display "outside the box" thinking for creating solutions and solving problems. Are receptive to fresh and new ideas from the team, can brainstorm practicality and execution of the same. You can use imaginative thinking to help the organization grow. You participate in networking and other local nonprofit events, keeping current with best practices and innovations in programming.

Flexibility and adaptability: You have a strong ability to prioritize, consider alternatives, and respond quickly and thoughtfully to unexpected changes. You provide necessary direction to the team that fosters productivity and innovation in dynamic work environments.

Leadership: You guide and inspire the team through their workstyles and accomplishments with a mindset of constant learning. You are able to design and implement training for all team members and work with ED on org-wide professional development.

Project Management: You can organize tasks and people to get things done on time and within budget. You make sure everyone knows what they need to do and when, keeping projects running smoothly and achieving goals successfully.

Emotional Intelligence: You provide mentorship and direction during times of change. You are seen as a trusted source or "go-to" for navigating interpersonal conflict. You display maturity and sensitivity in all interactions. You can facilitate conflict resolution with team members while acknowledging personal bias.

Salary and Benefits: 
Annual salary is $81,000-90,000 depending on experience. Full-time, exempt position with a competitive benefits package including PTO, health, dental, and vision insurance, and 401k with employer match.
