About the Department of Computer Science:
The University of Akron's Department of Computer Science offers programs in Computer Science and Information Systems. Additionally, we provide a comprehensive Master of Science degree, specifically in Computer Science.
Currently, the Department has 11 full-time faculty members, 8 tenure track and 3 non-tenure track. We currently have more than 750 undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in computing.
 
About the Department of Statistics:
The University of Akron's Department of Statistics offers programs in Statistics, Data Science, and Actuarial Science. Additionally, we provide a comprehensive Master of Science degree, specifically in Statistics. These fields are growing significantly and presenting innumerable opportunities for graduates. UA graduates hold a unique advantage as their degree comes from the only northeast Ohio program in a standalone statistics department. As the industry continues to grow over the next decade with significant opportunities in the local business and medical sectors, this position will provide a distinct advantage to professionals in these fields by emphasizing statistics and computing.
Currently, the Department of Statistics has 7 faculty members, 4 tenure track and 3 non-tenure track. We currently have more than 100 undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in the statistics department.

Required Eligibility Criterion:
 
The University of Akron Department of Computer Science https://www.uakron.edu/computer/cs and The Department of Statistics https://www.uakron.edu/statistics are seeking applications for a joint tenure-track Assistant Professor position specializing in data science or closely related area beginning August 26, 2024.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or an equivalent terminal degree in Computer Science or Statistics, or a closely related field from an accredited institution. They must have demonstrated teaching potential and show evidence of interest in teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels. They are also required to have strong commitment to effective and innovative teaching, with strong technical and communication skills. The candidates must also show potential for research productivity that can be disseminated in quality peer-reviewed journals.

Applicants for this joint position must also have at least 18 graduate credit hours in the discipline of Computer Science, and also at least 18 graduate credit hours in the discipline of Statistics.

Salary is commensurate with background and experience. The successful candidate will have appointments in both academic units and be expected to effectively teach graduate courses in their area of expertise and core undergraduate courses in both departments.
 
Startup funds are available, and the successful candidate will be expected to have a strong background in Data Science and to establish a productive and ongoing funded research program related to data science and participate in internal and external professional service activities.

The primary department of the successful candidate will be determined by the candidate’s disciplinary area. Also, per our Collective Bargaining Agreement, the RTP guidelines for the joint appointed faculty are defaulted to their primary department during their first year. Thereafter, at the request of the faculty member, both primary and secondary departments’ tenured faculty will develop hybrid RTP guideline, which is also described in the CBA.

The departments seek to assemble a cohort of teacher-scholars who will contribute strongly to the excellence of UA through teaching, scholarship, service and collaboration.
 
Preferred Criteria:
The ideal candidate should have collaborative research experience and their research should show evidence of potential for external funding. They should also have adequate statistical programming skills and statistical computing knowledge for modern-day statistical needs.

It is highly desirable that the candidate have publications in Data Science and teaching experience after finishing their terminal degree.

Teaching and Research Requirements:
Contribute to (i.e., teach, do curriculum development, etc.) our existing courses, as well as teach/develop elective courses in their own areas of expertise. Conduct research in their areas of specialization and related areas that is publishable in recognized journals and/or worthy of external funding. Develop research collaborations with other institutions of higher education or research in northeast Ohio and beyond. Show potential in their teaching and research for reaching out into and benefiting the under-served communities in Akron and northeast Ohio (such as those in our local urban school systems or local community organizations).
