The Yale Ciencia Initiative (YCI) is dedicated to fighting for the next generation of scientists from underrepresented groups. The Research Associate will work with the YCI Director to lead various projects testing novel interventions to promote diversity, professional development, and career success among trainees in the biomedical sciences. The Research Associate will also contribute to data collection and analyses; preparing progress reports, presentations, and scholarly publications; and to the identification of funding opportunities, the development of project ideas, and to proposal development and grant writing. May perform other duties as assigned, including preparing expense reports, managing budgets, and supervising interns. The ideal candidate will have direct experience with graduate training (through an MS or PhD degree) and experience designing and leading diversity training programs. The position requires a flexible work schedule as different phases of the grant and complex training calendars and timelines will drive the schedule.
Specifically, the Research Associate will help lead the programmatic management and curriculum design for the PhD and MD/PhD tracks of the Yale Program to Advance Training of Health and Sciences (PATHS). The Research Associate will be responsible for identifying, inviting, and scheduling speakers, mentors, and instructors; overseeing the application review and onboarding processes; coordinating with volunteer mentors; and planning curricular content in collaboration with other program staff.
The Research Associate will also lead the development of curricula for the Yale Ciencia Academy (YCA), a federally funded project that promotes the professional development and career success of scientists from diverse backgrounds at the PhD-level and into the postdoctoral transition. The Research Associate will be responsible for assisting in the development of YCA video training modules and leading an accompanying training program for research advisors.
Overall Tasks:
Manages recruitment, application review and selection, and onboarding process of students, scientist mentors, and speakers
Creates and updates databases of contact and outcome data for past, current, and future participants, collaborators, and speakers.
Develops and manages internal communications (e.g., emails, newsletters, manuals, guidelines, protocols) to inform staff, collaborators, participants, and other stakeholders about project’s goals, procedures, progress, and outcomes
Writes and develops external-facing products (e.g., websites, newsletters, reports, social media posts) to communicate program goals, progress, and accomplishments
Leads project planning using a variety of project management strategies and software to maintain project timelines, track responsibilities and tasks, and ensure timely completion of deliverables and meeting of deadlines
Performs literature review, contributes significantly to idea development and research planning, and compiles, analyzes and prepares figures of research data and findings
Writes grant progress reports and manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications, assists with the writing of grant proposals, and gives scholarly presentations
Assists in identifying potential sources of funding and prospective partnerships
May perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties
1. Recommends the design and implementation of procedures and protocols under the direction of a higher-level authority. 2. Investigates, analyzes, and reaches preliminary scientific conclusions related to research planning 3. Ensures data results are compiled, analyzed, and presented properly. 4. Analyzes, develops and interprets scientific results. Maintains clear documentation of results. Prepares scientific reports and papers for research proposals and published reports. 5. Performs independent research and laboratory techniques and participates in experimental research planning. 6. Interacts with internal contacts including the PI, research assistants, graduate students, Radiation Safety and Biological Safety officers, and Animal Care personnel to discuss and evaluate research results and to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the laboratory. 7. Interacts with external contacts such as researchers at other institutions, staff at biotechnology and reagents companies to consult on research methods and to keep abreast of product information and developments. 8. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Master’s Degree in a scientific discipline and one year experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Knowledge of the literature on interventions to promote diversity and inclusion and professional development in the biomedical among undergraduate and graduate biomedical trainees and experience designing and leading these types of programs.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Experience writing scholarly publications and giving scholarly presentations. Demonstrated data management, analysis, and visualization skills. Technical writing skills, as demonstrated by authoring of reports, funding proposals, peer-reviewed manuscripts, and internal/external communications to project stakeholders.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Strong communication skills, as demonstrated by the ability to coordinate tasks and projects in written and verbal forms with internal and external team members and stakeholders.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Ability to multi-task, plan and manage several projects, meet and prioritize multiple deadlines, and to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a team. Demonstrated initiative, self-motivation, and leadership.
Required Skill/Ability 5:
Excellent interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated professional demeanor, and the ability to work with people of different backgrounds in culturally aware, sensitive and responsive ways. Demonstrated efforts to promote inclusion and diversity in the sciences.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
PhD in biomedical science or related field. PhD students expecting to graduate by May 31, 2022 may apply. Proficiency with Qualtrics; databases; online collaboration tools; social media; MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel; and graphic design and illustration software (e.g., Illustrator, Photoshop, Canva). Creative and graphic design abilities. Experience with planning events and managing budgets.
