Research Specialist

Job Description

The Laboratory of Cellular Neurobiology is seeking a Research Specialist to be part of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. The Research Specialist focuses on investigating pathogenic pathways and finding novel therapeutic targets for neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and obesity, related disorders. We make extensive use of cell and animal models and employ a variety of molecular and biochemical techniques.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage mouse colonies, including routine care, breeding, injections, behavioral testing, and tissue harvesting and preparation.

  • Perform small animal brain structural and functional MRI scans.

  • Perform molecular and biochemical assays on cells and rodent and human tissues. Tasks will include cell transfection, PCR, quantitative PCR, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization, and molecular cloning.

  • Responsible for daily lab operations, including ordering and managing laboratory supplies, compliance with regulatory requirements, care and maintenance of laboratory equipment, and coordinating among laboratory research projects within and outside of our laboratory group.

  • Develop and implement new assays.

  • Supervise and train students, provide technical advice and assistance to other laboratory members.

  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • One year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
  • Master's Degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Research experience in cell culture and, molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology and/or neuroscience
  • Self-motivated and actively seeking to further develop skills, expertise and knowledge.

Role/Level/Range: ACRP/03/MA  
Starting Salary Range: $17.11 - $29.90 HRLY ($41,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience) 
Employee group: Full Time 
Schedule: Mon to Fri, 8:30 am to 5 pm 
Exempt Status: Non-Exempt
