The position of Human Resources Director plays a pivotal role in fulfilling this mission by ensuring that the College’s staffing, employee relations, and organizational development needs are met with the highest standards. By aligning HR strategies with institutional goals and providing leadership in talent management, compliance, and operational processes, this position directly supports the faculty, staff, and leadership in their pursuit of excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement. Through effective HR management, this role enables the College to maintain a supportive environment that empowers educators to thrive and make a lasting impact.

Essential Job Duties

The Human Resources Director provides confidential interface and consultation with and between the College of Education community (faculty, academic unit heads, staff, etc.) and Human Resources’ central offices while demonstrating the ability to independently problem solve, interpret policies, and procedures, and make decisions and/or recommendations to leadership regarding significant HR matters.

The position reports directly to the CED Assistant Dean for Operations (ADO). The HR Director has access to the institution’s Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO), working with the CHRO to help shape institutional HR strategy. The CHRO contributes to the HR Director’s annual evaluation. The HR Director is supported by subject matter experts in the central HR Office who assist the Director with HR questions or circumstances as needed. The position operates with autonomy and, as proficiency is demonstrated, is delegated the authority to see business processes through from beginning to end.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Designs and implements CED HR strategy, policy, and procedure that align with legal and organizational requirements. Monitors and audits internal controls and processes to ensure compliance.
  • Advises the ADO and CED leadership in resolving issues regarding staffing, position management, organizational development, recruitment and hiring, leave administration, employee relations, and performance.
  • Supervises and leads 4 full-time HR Specialists. Ensures the team has the appropriate training and understands HR processes to carry out their jobs. Leads the team in setting goals and facilitating professional development opportunities.
  • Works with Director of Finance & Business Operations and Director of IT & Facilities to develop operational policy and procedure.
  • Manages the employee life cycle programs and ensures best practices are followed from the recruiting of candidates to offboarding.
  • Facilitates performance management systems as outlined by university and state guidelines. Addresses employee concerns, grievances, and disciplinary matters.
  • Utilizes HR Information Systems (HRIS) to manage all personnel and human resource data.
  • Establishes and maintains positive relationships between employees and central units.
  • Gathers data and prepares presentations using a variety of media to convey meaningful information to an individual or group.
  • Advises on correspondence from the Dean. Consult on messages of difficult and crucial decisions.

This position requires a thorough knowledge of the college and its programs and operations. Responsibilities also require significant knowledge of HR and payroll policies and guidelines related to SHRA and EHRA personnel, federal and state employment law and regulations, and college procedures and best practices. The HR Director position also requires knowledge of applicable technology, web-based data systems, and programs. The incumbent should maintain a proficient working knowledge of HR software programs and upgrades utilized for HR actions, reporting, and recruitment by attending all applicable training when necessary.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university preferably with coursework applicable to HR management, human relations and/or business administration; and
  • Four years of directly-related program development and personnel management experience demonstrating competencies needed to perform the work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills including active listening, communication, and a high level of discretion.
  • Experience supporting human resources functions in a higher education/academic environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to work effectively with administration, faculty, and staff at all levels.
  • Previous experience and functional expertise in a generalist HR role that may include employee relations, international employment, payroll, recruiting, and/or knowledge of employment law.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
  • Experience using Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS) and an applicant tracking system (ATS).
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to prioritize and meet multiple objectives and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency in coaching and influencing managers on workforce management and HR programs
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and convey HR best practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in human resources, business administration, or related field.
  • At least 4-6 years of experience in human resources leadership, preferably in an academic or large organizational setting.
  • Experience in implementing HR technology solutions such as HRIS and ATS.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting strategic initiatives, employee engagement, and organizational development.
  • Certifications such as SHRM-SCP or SPHR.
