Financial Aid Officer

Job Description

Under the direction of the Director of Financial Aid, the Financial Aid Officer (FAO) plays a pivotal role in the effective operations of UCLA School of Law's Financial Aid Office by serving as a bridge between prospective, admitted, current, and graduated students and the University. In collaboration with the Director and Associate Director of Financial Aid, the FAO will execute a variety of financial aid programs and initiatives to attract and retain the highest caliber of law students to meet short and long-term goals established by the Dean. The FAO is responsible for providing comprehensive student services and support on all financial aid matters, including counseling, addressing financial aid inquiries, and assisting with scholarship-related matters. The FAO analyzes students' financial needs and eligibility for aid, offers guidance on accessing financial assistance, interprets UCLA financial aid policies, and proactively communicates with students about upcoming deadlines, impacts on financial aid, and other relevant information. Other key responsibilities include interpreting financial aid policies, procedures, and regulations, analyzing student data to determine financial aid eligibility, serving as a primary point of contact for financial aid inquiries, initiating the GLACIER process for international students, and offering guidance on financial systems. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills, proficiency in interpreting financial aid policies, and the ability to communicate complex information clearly to diverse student populations.


Salary & Compensation



  • UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Salary offers at the top of the range are not common. Qualifications


  • Professional experience counseling students individually and in a group setting in the areas of admissions and financial aid. (Required)
  • Experience using Complex databases. (Required)
  • Experience using financial and student software such as Student Records System (SRS) and Financial Aid Management (FAM). (Preferred)
  • Experience using standard office software (Microsoft Office), Internet and email applications. (Required)
  • Basic knowledge of financial aid policies, regulations and practices for awarding financial aid. (Required)
  • Basic knowledge of University policies, process, and procedures. (Required)
  • Basic knowledge of advising and counseling techniques to effectively relay information. (Required)
  • Ability to think critically and apply knowledge of policies and procedures to situations. (Required)
  • Excellent customer service and organizational skills. (Required)
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality and integrity of all financial matters. (Required)
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and projects, meet deadlines, use sound judgment, and interpret laws and regulations. (Required)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, active listening skills, and possess customer service orientation skills. (Required)
  • Ability to assess, implement, and execute improvements in process. (Required)
  • Ability to make individual and group presentations to provide information, explain policies and procedures, and publicize the Financial Aid Office's services and promote UCLA School of Law. (Required)
  • Demonstrated mathematical and quantitative skills to calculate formulas and conduct financial aid analysis. (Required)
  • Acute attention to detail. Ability to track data and develop reports using systems and databases. (Required)

Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations


  • Bachelor's Degree in Education, Student Affairs, or related area and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. (Required)
  • National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA) (Preferred)

Special Conditions for Employment


  • Background Check: Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation.
  • Live Scan Background Check: A Live Scan background check must be completed prior to the start of employment.
  • Occasional attendance at offsite conferences and meetings. (Required)
  • 5% Domestic Travel to participate and represent the Law School at various financial aid events.
