The Newton YMCA in Newton, Iowa, is seeking an exceptional Chief Executive Officer to lead our organization into the future.

Role Definition:

The CEO has the leadership responsibility for the Association’s strategic direction, financial stability, community relations, staff development, program and facilities operations, communication, and technology systems. The CEO is also responsible for conformity of YMCA best practices through the policies, directives, and guidelines of the Board of Directors.

Dimension:

1. Reports directly to the YMCA Board of Directors.

2. Oversees direct reports: Dir. of Operations, Dir. of Finance & HR., Dir. of Childcare, and Dir. of Building & Property. Oversees indirect reports: Dir. of Youth & Adult Sports, Dir. of Aquatic & Dir. of Fitness Programs.

3. Acts as liaison to community, local businesses, and state and federal YMCA Affiliations.

Organizational Relationships:

1. Direct liaison to Newton board of directors and staff.

2. Local liaison to the community, businesses, and organizations.

3. State and federal liaison to other YMCA Associations.

Principal Activities:

1. Oversee day-to-day operations.

2. Provide guidance and direction in the areas of:

a) Strategic Direction

  • In collaboration with the board of directors, establishes the organization’s policies, goals, and strategic direction. Implements its policies, plans, and directives, and reports on matters affecting the welfare of the association.
  • Directs the strategic plan and assures the accomplishment of organizational goals and objectives.
  • Knowledge to bring new technology advantages, budget administration, and records and information systems management to the Association.
  • Understanding of policy formulation, processes, and board development.
  • Ability to understand change and lead the Association through change to growth and success.
  • Maintain an understanding of the philosophy and principles of administration of a non-profit membership agency committed to the greater good.

b) Financial Management

  • Ensures prudent fiscal management, reporting, and controls. Oversees financial operations.
  • Provide a solid foundation in financial development, annual support, and capital campaigns; including the following areas:

o Oversee and lead annual budgeting and planning process and recommend annual budget for board approval; monitor progress and changes and keep management team abreast of the organization's financial status.

o Provides leadership in the capital campaign process for a new $15 million dollar expansion project.

o Provides leadership in assisting in the YMCA’s annual campaign drive.

o Oversee organizational cash flow and forecasting.

o Effectively communicate and present critical financial matters to the Board of Directors.

o Assist in the coordination of the annual audit process.

o Work closely with investment broker to ensure endowments are achieving or exceeding board expectations.

c) Community Relations

  • Serve as the liaison between the business community and the YMCA and all of its program services. Build relationships and financial support with business professionals, members, volunteers, and staff.
  • Ability to interpret the mission, vision, and goals of the Association and translate them into meaningful community relationships.

d) Staffing & Resources

  • Provide a culture of success through skillfully leading, organizing, and overseeing staff and volunteers of high intelligence with diverse personalities.
  • Ability to delegate work and assign tasks while putting into place solid administrative procedures to keep the Association’s operations running smoothly, efficiently, and effectively.
  • Further establish the Newton YMCA human resources and administration, enhancing professional development, compensation and benefits, performance evaluation, training, and recruiting.

YMCA Information

Membership: 1,600 units and 3,300 members

Facility: 63,000 sq. ft. A 25-meter swimming pool, two large gymnasiums, weight room, cardio room, game room, boys/girls and men's/women's locker room

Programs: An all-day IQ4K quality 3-rated childcare center, swim lessons, swim team, personal swim lessons, youth sports, adult sports, fitness classes, fitness challenges, personal training, community events, and more

Operations: $2,300,000 budget. Made up of 45% childcare, 30% membership, 5% programs, 20% philanthropy

Endowment: $6,500,000

Projects: Currently in a comprehensive capital campaign for a 26,000 sq. ft. expansion

This project will be home to an additional basketball gym, indoor pickleball courts, an expanded wellness area, teen center, and additional childcare rooms

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, human services or related area; related graduate degree preferred.
  • YMCA Organizational Leader certification required within three years from date of hire.
  • Ten or more years broad management experience, preferably in the YMCA and/or not-for-profit sector, including strategic planning, board and volunteer development, philanthropic development, and multi-site operations.
  • Insight and skill to effectively lead a voluntary, not-for-profit organization within a complex internal and external environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in community relations, financial development, fiscal management, and board and volunteer development.
  • Ability to attract, retain, lead and motivate quality staff and volunteer leadership.
  • Knowledge and understanding of community resources and the ability to engage and partner these resources with the YMCA to meet strategic objectives.
  • Must be regarded as a peer to other top-level community leaders.
  • Must have commitment to the mission and cause of the YMCA and uphold its values and ethics.
  • Must be an articulate spokesperson on behalf of the YMCA.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful. An understanding of the national and international relationships of the YMCA is preferred.

 

Essential Functions
  • Partners with the governing board to set the organization’s policies, goals, and strategic direction. Implements its policies, plans, and directives, and reports on matters affecting the welfare of the association.
  • Provides leadership in securing needed resources for current operations, capital improvement, community development, and long-range financial stability. Oversees the long-range development of the association's resources. Ensures fundraising activities and strategies are sufficient to support the Y’s charitable needs.
  • Initiates and fosters relationships with all constituents through a systematic cultivation plan designed to increase support of the Y. Maximizes community partnerships, engages volunteers, and cultivates and solicits top donors and community leaders. Interprets the purpose and programs of the Association.
  • Directs the development of the strategic plan and assures the accomplishment of organizational goals and objectives.
  • Intentionally uses change as a strategy to expand options and opportunities and better leverage Y resources and capabilities. Oversees YMCA operations and programs and works with the board and staff to anticipate and address community needs. Fosters a climate of innovation to develop member-focused programs. Spearheads the development, communication, and implementation of effective strategies and processes.
  • Creates successful change by aligning structures, systems, and processes that are linked to the change. Directs the staff to carry out initiatives, assignments, and programs under the approved strategic plan and annual budget. Ensures a positive workplace culture and an effective staff organization.
  • Communicates and collaborates with government, schools, other not-for-profits, corporations, and other organizations in the community. Interprets the work of the YMCA to the community and ensures its cause, vision, values, and goals are understood. Executes strategic alliances with other Ys, community organizations, and global partners to benefit the community (e.g., state alliances, health care facilities, schools).
  • Develops and maintains excellent relationships within the community and the Association, as well as within the state, regional, national, and international YMCA movements.
  • Recommends annual budget for board approval. Ensures prudent fiscal management, reporting, and controls. Oversees financial operations.
