JOB DESCRIPTION

The Chemical Biology Group of Dr. Han Xiao at Rice University is looking for Postdoctoral Research Associates to work on chemical synthesis. We are looking for scholars with experiences in organic synthesis to join this project. Candidates with experiences in organic synthesis, and/or chemical biology are preferred.

Position Summary

The Chemical Biology Group of Dr. Han Xiao at Rice University is looking for Postdoctoral Research Associates to work on chemical synthesis. We are looking for scholars with experiences in organic synthesis to join this project. Candidates with experiences in medicinal chemistry, and/or chemical biology are preferred.

The focus of our research is the development of innovative chemical tools allowing us to understand complex biology system as well as develop novel therapeutic strategies. More information on the research program can be found at: http://xiao.rice.edu.

Salary: $48,000 annually

Essential Functions

  • Synthesizes organic molecules with biological activities
  • Develops novel strategies for synthesizing drugs
  • Designs drugs with enhanced activities
  • Mentors, oversees, and/or trains junior research team members
  • Publishes and presents research findings
  • Provides academic services (i.e. teaching classes) to the department as required
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

Additional Functions / Information

  • Supervise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students in the lab

Education, Experience, and Licenses/Certifications Requirements

  • Doctorate degree in chemistry, biology, bioengineering, or related fields

Substitutions

  • No substitutions for education or experience allowed

Skills Required

  • Knowledge of modern research of concepts and principles of organic chemistry and data collection/analyses.
  • Able to perform multi-step chemical synthesis
  • Able to design the synthetic route for unknown chemicals
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills, oral presentation skills, and a desire to develop these to a high level
  • Skilled in writing scholarly papers based on ongoing research with accompanying supporting information using Microsoft Word and/or ChemDraw and managing the journal publication process
  • Able to work independently and professionally with minimal supervision and direction

Preferences

  • Degree in organic chemistry, chemical biology,
  • Experience in organic chemistry or chemical biology
