Instructor, American Sign Language (ASL)

Job Description

Occupational Summary

The ideal candidate is enthusiastic, pleasant, and passionate about teaching American Sign Language and fostering an appreciation and respect for the Deaf Community. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Prepare materials for each class session such as syllabi and handouts
  • Implement activities that encourage students to use ASL in their daily lives
  • Provide each student with sufficient attention and opportunities for interaction with peers 
  • Develops incentives to keep participants excited and engaged in class
  • Provides feedback to students
  • Communicates effectively with students at different technology skill levels to support instruction 

Minimum Qualifications

ASL instructors must have a strong background in ASL linguistics and be able to effectively convey information to their students in a way that is easily understood.

Proficient communication skills - ASL fluency at native/near-native levels.

Preferred:
Possess, or be willing to obtain within one-year, Provisional Level Certification from the American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA).

A background in Deaf Studies or a Sign Language Education program.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to demonstrate the use of technology in the classroom

Excellent organizational skills

Excellent oral and written communication skills

Must have the ability to perform multiple tasks and work well with limited direct supervision

Must be self-motivated and possess excellent inter-personal skills

Must work well with others in a team environment

Should be familiar with and appreciate the mission of a community college
